“I was with Frédy Girardet, the famous Swiss chef, on Christmas morning eating a vacherin cheese and drinking a Château d’Yquem 1945. For me, that simple cheese and the fine wine, surrounded by all that friendship, was one of the best memories of my life.” —Joël Robuchon on his fondest food memory in an interview I did with him for @nowness—my first ever food story/assignment back in May 2011. Robuchon spent an hour w/ me speaking in my preferred language of Franglish 🇫🇷 He couldn’t have been more generous or patient & invited my boyfriend and me to dine at Atelier thereafter to experience firsthand his mantra of “Let the ingredients shine.” So grateful for that afternoon for which I was so nervous & which proved so seminal in my wonky career path.
